Message transferred to  through SMTP
We are having an intermittent problem with our Exchange 2003 server. Outgoing SMTP messages are forwarded through a smarthost. Occasionally some messages are never forwarded.Exhange queues are empty and the message does not appear in BadMail. I have also searched SMTP logs both on the Exchange Server and on the smarthost. The messages were never transmitted. It is not a particular domain or email address that has the problem. As far as I can tell it is random.Whenever it happens, message tracking shows:"Message transferred to through SMTP". (On the last line)Please note the extra space where the domain name should be. The message will only reappear if the server is actually rebooted. Restarting the SMTP service will not do it. No NDR is received, the message simply disappears.Anyone have any ideas?

Hi, Please check the TempTable by referring following KB article: How to use the Mfcmapi.exe utility to view and work with messages in the SMTP TempTables in Exchange 2000 Server and in Exchange Server 2003 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906557/en-us In addition, please exclude the File Level Anti-Virus from scanning Exchange related folders: Overview of Exchange Server 2003 and antivirus software http://support.microsoft.com/kb/823166/en-us If the issue still persists, please also check whether the following hotfix has been installed: E-mail senders do not receive an indication that some messages have been held by Exchange Server 2003 until the SMTP service, the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service, or the Exchange server is restarted http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950757/en-us Mike

We are having exactly the same problem with a similar sounding setup but need to know more about this to prevent it happening again!

The messages were appearing in the temptable and were visible with the mfcmapi utility. We resolved the problem with the hotfix mentioned.
